Mares - enthusiast free diving equipment.

Free diving equipment is an essential part for all enthusiast divers. From the amateur holiday snorkeler to the world record holder free-diver. The most basic setup is a good mask with a small volume, a snorkel (except for records and deep free-diving) and a good pair of fins. While mask differ a bit in material, view field and volume size. Fins comes off course also with different materials - but they are long/short types, mono-fins, different shapes, water channeling systems and open or closed heels (strap or full foot). What fins you choose is entirely up to you. If you don't have a chance to try before you buy, you are stuck with whatever you buy. Most likely you will have to "feel" your way to get the fins that are right for you.

Ever since I was 15 years old, when a friend of mine and me started training for this sport, it has been a part of my life. We trained for 10-12 hours in the pool every week. Summers went by with climbing and free diving. Maybe later I will post some pictures of a cliff outside west coast of Norway where we went. There is 150 meters of bouldering up to 20 meters above sea level, a cave and big wall diving reaching depths of 300 meter. A great kick was to rappel inside of the cave, a 15 meter drop with the free-diving gear on. Stop at about two meter above the water, take a deep breath and let go of the rope. A splash followed, diving down to 7 meters (about 22 feet), under a big rock and you'll see the sunlight from outside the cave shining true the ocean. What a trill!! Great childhood memories.

Mares has a genius diver bag for your free diving needs - The Cruise Free Dive. This is a functional and unique bag with enough space to hold your mask, snorkel and its length accommodates even the longest set of fins. Easy to bring a long - its your snorkeling buddy. And can get it at your local dive store for less than 25,-. Euros. Not bad at all!

Freediving - there is nothing like it!

Freediving is of the most fascinating extreme sports in the world. Diving in an other universe. Solely powered by yourself, only limited to your own capabilities.

Big Blue the movie.
If you don't know what free diving is, or you know but haven't seen the movie about Jacques Mayol.. The Big Blue, directed by Luc Besson from 1988 - is a must see! It is incredible. If you see the "version longe of The Grand Bleu" = the extended version, the underwater scenes in the introduction is absolutely astonishing.

During the last 10-15 years, Scuba diving has become everyones sport. It is not considered "extreme" anymore. Apnea / breath-holding / free diving on the other hand, has always kept the extreme sport feeling. i am not talking about snorkeling, a sport enjoyed by many charter tourist and hobbyist's. But the true passion within the world of free diving. Be that your want to beat the world record of holding your breath or record deep diving.

As one of the leading dive manufactures ( Mares) slogan says- Just Add Water.

Free diving is for everyone!
